About Barnardos

Barnardos is Ireland’s leading children’s charity.
Our aim is to make Ireland the best place in the world to be a child.

Barnardos vision is an Ireland where childhood is valued and all children and young people are cherished equally.

Barnardos has operated in the Republic of Ireland since 1962 and has successfully established itself as a major contributor to the development of policy and provision for children and families.

Barnardos became a fully independent organisation in 1989. In that time we have grown substantially, establishing a national presence and reinforcing our reputation for the quality and effectiveness of our work.

Today, we work with over 5,500 vulnerable children and their families each year, many of whom have fallen outside traditional support mechanisms through poverty, educational disadvantage or social exclusion. We provide direct family support services through a network of over 40 centres.

In addition, Barnardos offers a range of nation-wide information services for children, parents and professionals working in the field of child care, which include:

  • National Children’s Resource Centre – Provides free information on anything to do with children and families for parents, as well as training for child care professionals and community groups.

  • Bereavement Counselling – Barnardos' service for children who have suffered the painful death of a parent, carer, sibling or significant other person in their lives.

  • Beacon – Guardian ad Litem (Guardian at Law) Service providing children involved in family law proceedings with an independent voice in court.

  • Origins – Confidential information and tracing service for adults separated from their birth family through adoption or being raised in residential care, or seeking information on adoption today.

Barnardos' mission is to challenge and support families, communities, society and government to make Ireland the best place in the world to be a child, focusing specifically on children and young people whose well-being is under threat.

Our children and family centres deliver services that directly respond to individual kids’ needs.

These services can be broadly summarised as:

Advocacy
Recognising that we cannot directly impact on all the kids who need our help, Barnardos aims to improve the situation of all children in Ireland through our advocacy work. Our advocacy department was established in March 2005 and has identified four priority issues:
        Child poverty
        Child protection
        Educational disadvantage
         Alcohol abuse
